Why Entrepreneurs Need to Prepare for Rest: Lessons from The Sabbatical Method

Jul 13, 2024

When was the last time you rebooted your computer?

Probably not until something went wrong, right?

The same often applies to how we approach rest in our lives and businesses.

As an entrepreneur, I've seen firsthand how crucial it is to prepare for and prioritize rest.

Let me share some insights from my book, The Sabbatical Method, on how to make the most of your downtime.

The Importance of Preparing for Rest

The Reactive Rest Trap

Many of us only take breaks when forced to by circumstances:

  • Health issues
  • Family demands
  • Major life events

This reactive approach often leaves us unprepared to truly rest.

Learning from a New Mom's Experience

I recently spoke with a mom on my podcast, Growing Pains, who struggled during her maternity leave:

  • She was prepared for the baby, but not for how to rest
  • Unsure what to do, she started working again
  • This led to burnout and boundary issues

How to Prepare for a Reset

The Onset of a Reset

Before my recent vacation to Cape Cod, I:

  • Created an abbreviated schedule for my team
  • Focused on essential tasks
  • Eased into vacation mode

Set Intentions

I identified four areas where I needed clarity and planned to:

  • Journal
  • Reflect
  • Allow ideas to flow naturally

Establish Clear Boundaries

Communicate with your team:

  • Specify your out-of-office dates
  • Clarify how and when they can reach you
  • Define what constitutes an emergency

Position Resets Strategically

I prefer to schedule vacations at the end or beginning of quarters:

  • Allows for strategic planning
  • Provides perspective on the past quarter
  • Helps refocus on long-term vision

Benefits of Proper Rest

  1. Forcing function for defining operations
  2. Opportunity to break bad habits
  3. Lowered stress levels for better idea generation
  4. Improved decision-making
  5. Enhanced personal relationships

By preparing for rest, setting boundaries, and strategically positioning your resets, you can:

  • Make more peaceful business decisions
  • Enrich your personal relationships
  • Design a business and life that aligns with your vision

Don't wait for a crash to take a break.

Schedule your next reset now and prepare meaningfully for it.

Your future self will thank you.
